영재교육 진흥법 제2조(정의)

1. "영재"란 재능이 뛰어난 사람으로서 타고난 잠재력을 계발하기 위하여 특별한 교육이 필요한 사람을 말한다.

2. "영재교육"이란 영재를 대상으로 각 개인의 능력과 소질에 맞는 내용과 방법으로 실시하는 교육을 말한다.

3. "영재교육기관"이란 영재학교, 영재학급 및 영재교육원을 말한다.

4. "영재학교"란 영재교육을 위하여 이 법에 따라 지정되거나 설립되는 고등학교과정 이하의 학교를 말한다.

5. "영재학급"이란 「초ㆍ중등교육법」에 따라 설립ㆍ운영되는 고등학교과정 이하의 각급 학교에 설치ㆍ운영하여 영재교육을 실시하는 학급을 말한다.

6. "영재교육원"이란 영재교육을 실시하기 위하여 「고등교육법」 제2조에 따른 학교(이에 준하는 학교로서 다른 법률에 따라 설치된 학교를 포함하며, 이하 "대학등"이라 한다) 등에 설치ㆍ운영되는 부설기관을 말한다.

7. "영재교육연구원"이란 효율적인 영재교육 운영을 위하여 필요한 각종 연구ㆍ개발 및 지원 업무를 수행하기 위하여 지정 및 설치ㆍ운영되는 기관을 말한다.

8. "영재교육특례자"(이하 "특례자"라 한다)란 이 법에서 정한 영재교육대상자 중에서 하나 또는 그 이상의 분야에서 타고난 재능과 잠재력이 현저히 뛰어나 특별한 교육적 지원이 필요한 사람을 말한다.
