Maritime Traffic Safety Act, Article 100 (Sound Signals in Restricted Visibility)
(1) In or near waters of restricted visibility, all ships, whether by day or night, shall give the following signals:
1. A power-driven vessel making way through the water shall sound at intervals of not more than two minutes one prolonged blast;
2. A power-driven vessel underway but stopped and making no way through the water shall sound at intervals of not more than two minutes two prolonged blasts in succession with an interval of about two seconds between them;
3. A vessel not under command, a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver, a vessel constrained by her draught, a sailing vessel, a vessel engaged in fishing, or a vessel engaged in towing or pushing another vessel shall, in lieu of the signals under subparagraphs 1 and 2, sound at intervals of not more than two minutes three blasts in succession (one prolonged followed by two short blasts);
4. A vessel being towed (or, if more than one vessel is towed, the last vessel of the tow), if manned, shall at intervals of not more than two minutes sound four blasts in succession (one prolonged followed by three short blasts). When practicable, this signal shall be made immediately after the signal made by the towing vessel;
5. A ship at anchor shall at intervals of not more than one minute ring the bell rapidly for about five seconds. However, a vessel at anchor engaged in fishing or a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver when at anchor and carrying out work shall give the signal under subparagraph 3, and a ship of 100 meters or more in length shall sound the bell in the forepart of the ship and immediately after the ringing of the bell sound the gong rapidly for about five seconds in the after part, and may in addition sound three blasts in succession (one short, one prolonged, and one short) to give warning of her position and of the possibility of collision to an approaching ship;
6. A ship aground of less than 100 meters in length shall give the bell signal and, immediately before and after the rapid ringing of the bell for about five seconds at intervals of not more than one minute, three separate and distinct strokes on the bell. In such cases, she may in addition sound an appropriate whistle signal;
7. A ship aground of 100 meters or more in length shall give the bell signal in the forepart at intervals of not more than one minute, immediately before and after the rapid ringing of the bell for about five seconds giving three separate and distinct strokes on the bell, and shall sound the gong rapidly for about five seconds in the after part immediately after the last stroke of the bell. In such cases, she may in addition sound an appropriate whistle signal;
8. A ship of less than 12 meters in length need not give the signals under subparagraphs 1 through 7, and a ship of 12 meters or more but less than 20 meters in length need not give the signals under subparagraphs 5 through 7. However, if she does not, she shall make some other efficient sound signal at intervals of not more than two minutes;
9. A pilot vessel when engaged in pilotage duty may, in addition to the signals under subparagraph 1, 2, or 5, sound an identity signal consisting of four short blasts.
(2) Where a pushing ship and a ship being pushed are rigidly connected in a composite unit, they shall be regarded as a single power-driven vessel and paragraph (1) shall apply.
