이 법은 우리나라의 역사(이하 "한국사"라 한다)를 연구하고 그 체계를 정립함에 필요한 각종 사료의 조사ㆍ수집ㆍ보존ㆍ편찬과 이를 바탕으로 한 한국사의 연구ㆍ편찬ㆍ연수ㆍ보급을 원활하게 하여, 한국사 연구의 심화와 체계적인 발전 및 국민의 역사인식 고양에 기여함을 목적으로 한다.
