국군조직법 제12조(합동참모본부)

① 합동참모본부에 합동참모의장 외에 소속 군이 다른 3명 이내의 합동참모차장과 필요한 참모 부서를 둔다.

② 합동참모차장은 합동참모의장을 보좌하며, 합동참모의장이 부득이한 사유로 직무를 수행할 수 없을 때에는 서열 순으로 그 직무를 대행한다.

(2) The^ð더 Vice^v바이스 Chairman체어먼 of어^v브 the^ð더 Joint조인트 Chiefs치^f프스 of어^v브 Staff스태^f프 shall섈 assist어시스트 the^ð더 Chairman체어먼 of어^v브 the^ð더 Joint조인트 Chiefs치^f프스 of어^v브 Staff스태^f프 and,앤드 when웬 the^ð더 Chairman체어먼 is이즈 unable어네이블 to투 perform퍼^f폼 his히즈 or오 her허 duties두티즈 for^f포 unavoidable어너^v보이더블 reasons,^r리즌즈 shall섈 act액트 on안 his히즈 or오 her허 behalf비해^f프 in인 order오더 of어^v브 seniority.시뇨^r리티

③ 합동참모본부의 직제는 대통령령으로 정하되, 각군의 균형 발전과 합동작전 수행을 보장할 수 있도록 하여야 한다.
